Privacy Policy

The John Howard Society of Ottawa (JHSO) is a not-for-profit, charitable organization committed to providing a broad range of evidence-based and outcome-driven community services throughout eastern Ontario. The JHSO mission statement reads: "Effective, just, and humane responses to crime and its causes."

The goal of JHSO is to promote safe and resilient communities through a broad continuum of services that prevent crime, reduce poverty, foster inclusion, and build self-sufficiency. John Howard Society affiliates fill an essential role in public education, community service, and in fostering safe and effective programs and supports all over Canada in over 60 communities.

Privacy Commitment

The John Howard Society of Ottawa is committed to protecting the confidentiality and privacy of the personal information of its service users. We have a policies in place to ensure privacy of service users and to hold us accountable. John Howard Society of Ottawa employees must follow all agency privacy policies. 

We have adopted operational steps to ensure information is maintained and to prevent it being exposed, lost or destroyed. Protocols include, but are not limited to, not asking for any identifying personal information unless necessary, storing non-personal information securely, and safely destroying all automatically collected non-personal information regularly. 

Information Collection

Personal identifiable information is gather directly from the user. It is not mandatory for the users to provide any identifying information to benefit from the service. Our goal is to reduce barriers to accessing services in the community. It is completely up to you what personal identifying information you would like to share.  Personal information users may provide, include your name, address, telephone number, and email address. this information may be used to support the user toward connecting with the appropriate service.

The site may collect non-personal information related to your visit, such as Internet Protocol address (i.e. IP address), browser type, browser version, the pages of our Website that you visit, the time and date of your visit, the time spent on those pages, or unique device identifiers. This information is used for statistical analysis and reaching the appropriate service population.

Use of information collected

If you choose to provide any identifying personal information such as your name, address, telephone number, and email address, it will be used to connect you with the appropriate services in the community. Personal information will not be shared with any community service providers without users consent. Users reserve the right to revoke consent at any time. You do not have to provide any personal identifying information to be connected to a service in the community.  System Navigators can provide you with the necessary information to reach the community service provider directly. 

Usage tracking

Our websites may automatically record some general information about your visit. This information is used strictly statistical analysis using Google Analytics. We hope to reach those most in need of the service through targeted advertising. 

JHSO will never make any effort to identify you based on your visit to the website. The information that is collect is not linked to identifying information. By disable cookies, using a private browser, or by using the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-On, you can prevent the webpage from collecting non-personal information automatically.

We protect nonpublic personal information by

  • Restricting access to all information to only those personnel for whom the information is necessary;
  • Maintaining physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards that comply with the relevant laws and regulations; 
  • educate employees about information security policies and procedures in order to make them aware of their roles and responsibilities in safeguarding information resources.
  • JHSO staff will not ask for any identifying information unless the user request a connection to a community service provider be facilitated by a JHSO staff.
  • We safely destroy any automatically non-identifying information regularly.
  • Regularly review our privacy policies and procedures.
